The Straits Chinese is a culturally distinctive group of Chinese residing predominantly in the formerly British Straits Settlements of Penang, Malacca and Singapore, whose forefathers were early Chinese traders settling down in Malacca at about the closing of the fourteenth century. During the course of time the Straits Chinese evolved a unique culture built from parts of ancient Chinese customs and Malay culture. The Malay name of the Straits Chinese is "peranakans" meaning "local-borns".
