A generic name for a wide variety of ceramics made south of the city of Karatsu in Hizen Province (modern Saga Prefecture), generally classified in three groups; plain Karatsu with single glaze, Korean-style Karatsu and decorated Karatsu with milky or semi-transparent glaze over underglaze iron-oxide; the best of which was produced from the Momoyama through early Edo periods and prized by tea-ceremony connoisseurs
