GLOSSARY

Fujian blue and white porcelain

Fujian province is mostly known for its ivory colored Dehua blanc-de-chine porcelain. As being closer to the coast than Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province they had the logistic and technological possibility to compete with the inland porcelain center Jingdezhen.

In Fujian export ware from the 18th to the 19th century quite a large number of the porcelain is decorated in underglaze blue. The porcelain paste is not really the same when compared to the Jingdezhen one and cobalt decoration does not fit really well under the glaze, so there is a tendency for the glaze to look a bit wrinkly lacking better words. Fujian wares are also often "molded" towards an outside mold incorporating the foot rim, so on Fujian wares the foot rim is not trimmed with a knife as with Jingdezhen wares, but look rounded and a bit messy.

Most porcelain that was recovered from the Teksing cargo was from Fujian and this cargo gives a rich opportunity for comparison.
