Splashed three color (sancai) glaze known as "tiger skin pattern" (Hu pi ban), better known as 'egg & spinach' glaze, applied directly onto the biscuit that is coated with a creamy slip and then covered with a clear glaze.On the base of these bowls there are usually a crudely drawn shop mark in underglaze blue within underglaze blue double circles, just inside the footrim.

A special type of Kangxi period porcelain bowls were only bisque fired and then decorated with incised floral decorations and white, yellow, green, and brown colored low fired porcelain glazes. These are generally known as 'brinjal' bowls after their occasionally dominating dark purple aubergine color.
A special version of this kind of bowls are called egg and spinach, since they are decorated with white, yellow, green and purple or brown splotches.
This decoration is made in imitation of the Tang dynasty 'three color' sancai lead glaze decoration that occurred almost exclusively on funeral pottery implements and figures such as camels, horses or a variety of warriors or attendants etc. of the time.
