British porcelain in which the body is fired to a translucent state without a glaze before the glaze is applied and fired at a lower temperature. For the biscuit firing, the body is supported in powdered alumina to cut down warping. Developed in the late l8th century by Josiah Spode to meet the demand for a white, translucent ware to compete with imported Oriental porcelain. Bone ash are used to provide a viscous body flux.
