Ceramic hatstands first appeared during the Jiaqing reign and were a tall pot.
Commencing Daoguang and through to Tongzhi the tall pots had a number of holes cut into the body, promoting a through flow of air and thus assisting in the removal of odours from the hat, which was of course placed on top of the pot.
From Guangxu onwards the holes disappeared leaving the hatstand as a high straight sided cylindrical pot.
